Police and Fire Personnel — Legacy Program
Estate and Disability Planning Program
Those who stand ready to serve deserve plans that stand ready for them.
Beacon Law Centre’s Police and Fire Legacy Program offers reduced-rate estate and incapacity planning for BC’s firefighters, police, and their families – because protecting your legacy is part of protecting our community.
Our mission is to ensure every police officer and firefighter has a complete estate and disability plan.
Our commitment, to make that happen, is a free initial consultation and a full 50% discount on the complete plan.
Why we Offer this Program
Firefighters and police officers face higher rates of death and disability, not only from line-of-duty trauma but also from occupational disease and psychological injury.
A fulsome estate and incapacity plan directly addresses the practical consequences of that risk: ensure loved ones are protected and personal wishes are documented, before a crisis.
Many people take an “a la carte” approach to their planning, often due to the cost of legal services. We are providing a discount for a specific purpose: to ensure that complete plans, not just parts, are available.
Components to our Plan
| Risk | How we Help |
| Higher cancer and early death rate | A Will ensures assets go to chosen beneficiaries without delay and with minimal expense. |
| Permanent disability from trauma or illness | Enduring Power of Attorney appoints a trusted person to manage finances if incapacitated, potentially starting during life |
| Mental health or physical incapacity | Representation Agreement allows naming a representative for health and personal car decisions – essential for physical incapacity or when PTSD or trauma impairs decision making |
| Young families & shift work | Firefighters and police officers getting started in their careers often have young kids and irregular hours. Affordable, packaged planning removes barriers to “someday” tasks |

Q & A
What’s included?
You will receive, for you and a spouse, a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney, and Representation Agreement.
What does each document do?
Put very simply:
- Wills direct what happens with your possessions, when you die. If you have minor children, you can also set out your preferred guardians.
- Enduring Powers of Attorney allow someone to manage your legal and financial affairs while alive.
- Representation Agreements appoint a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf only when you are unable to do so. We will also include our Living Will provisions, which allow you to state preferences for sustaining care and/or a “Do Not Resuscitate” wish.
Does the discount apply to other services?
We’re offering this discount for this package for the purpose of our mission. While we would love to serve you for additional legal needs, we will do so at our regular prices.
What if my situation is too complicated for the standard plan?
We hope to surprise you with our ability to handle complex situations within our proven process. We have deep experience with all manner of planning and profiles. Nearly all families will be fully supported by our plan.
What if I need additional services at the same time?
Should you have additional or extraordinarily advanced needs, we’ll explore them during our free initial consultation. If more is required, we will quote you the price for the add-on (still providing the standard plan at the full discount) so that you can decide whether and how to proceed.
An additional need is usually related to optimizing your structures in life and good health, such as transferring your home into joint tenancy with your spouse or creating a company for a side-hustle.
An extraordinarily advanced need could be multiple Wills across multiple countries, setting up Joint Spousal Trusts, or tax-planned reorganization of your multi-million-dollar family holding company.
Who qualifies for the discount?
Our discount is available to all active police officers, fire services personnel, members of the RCMP Force, chiefs of police units and fire departments, and RCMP Commissioners. We also include any spouse of the qualifying person, in order to ensure a complete family plan.
Do retired or former first responders qualify?
Our aim is to protect those actively serving, who are increasing risks to their health and the future of their families. While we are deeply grateful for all those who have served before, our focus and our discount are intended for those in the field.
Is this limited to a region or specific organization?
All of British Columbia.
Our goal is to ensure that all who are serving are protected. As we launch this program, however, we are publishing it slowly and in limited areas to manage demand and minimize backlog.
